This is amazing. The animation quality is shit, but it's over half an hour long. The sound effects and the background set pieces are spectacular.

This doesn't have the immediate payoff of a Plamoo or Boivin, but stick with it and your fucking jaw will drop. The cinematography is mind-blowing. It'll also make you realize how much subtle movements can convey--old Joes aren't the most articulated figures out there, but this is one of the most lifelike stop motions I've ever seen. And above all, it's fucking cool.

It's impressive that he was able to get so much mileage out of fixed-pose toys, but I thought the special effects were just "ok." Homegrown, handmade special effects are indeed cool, but they were kind of choppy here. Guys like plamoo have been doing em well for a while (pic related).

I have it (or at least one, I'm sure there are multiple apps for this). It's really hard to keep a phone steady in the exact same position while taking shots and manipulating the figure, so making stop motion with it is kind of hellish. Your framing will be all over the place. It's suitable for making dumb little animations of your friends, but for something as close-up as toy photography, forget it. The changes in position and angle are way too apparent at close range.

Pic related, a terrible, terrible animation I made while trying said app.

Then why bother doing it at all?
The only reason it's crap is because you don't want to put any effort into it.
If you don't want to put any effort in it, why do you think you should get praise for it. If it looks like shit, then people will say it looks like shit.
If you calim it was "just funnin' around" and that you don't want praise, then don't get butthurt when you get none.

Not really. You're suggesting that we buy an item with a singular purpose (I'm really not seeing the "multiple purposes" you talked about, and you did not explain) just so we can use an inferior phone camera to make stop-motion animations. I have a nice little Sony point and shoot with a tripod that I can use if I want to go about this seriously. Trying to make stop-motion with an iPhone app is pretty dumb to begin with. It's something to mess around with when you're bored, but if you're trying to get serious with it, you're better off with a REAL camera.

So you basically just proved my point. You have the tools to do a decent job, yet you go the shitty/lazy route.

>you're better off with a REAL camera.
And again, point proven.

>You're suggesting
>you talked about
>you did not explain
Implying I'm the same poster.
I'm just a guy who is tired of seeing people who could possibly produce much better work if they put effort into it, posting shit because they refuse to put any effort into it, and then being offended because somebody calls it crap (which it is).
You people claim to be so smart, and artistic and creative, yet you never seem to want to do anything right, and then claim "I was just fooling around with it" to dodge criticism.

I'm working on a stop motion using legos right now.
Rocking at 15 FPS and after a whole weekend of problems I finally got the first second of footage done yesterday.

Yeah.

Anyway, for my fellow filmers out there who have a flicker problem with their lights (when the lighting seems to change a lot) there's a program called VirtualDUB. I don't know what it costs. I just got it of TPB because I don't like SourceForge (the site the primary download is hosted on).

After you've got it downloaded, get a plug-in called "MSU Deflicker".

Here's a tutorial on where to go from there.
http://timelapseblog.com/2010/01/09/hdr-time-lapse-deflicker/

Unless you're really anal about effects, all this does is stop the annoying flicker.

I just finalize my animations through Monkeyjam to an avi file in the highest quality and toss it into the program, then add that filer.

It's fucking amazing.

Chroma key is actually really useful. Not for stuff like adding a background or adding special effects. I use it for removing stands and hands from scenes.

Sometimes getting figures to stand is really hard and depending on the action, impossible. You can't get many figures to run while balancing on one foot the whole time.

Not to mention even with greenscreen, good stop motion is really hard and time consuming. You take any help you can get.

Best LEGO stop motion animation i've seen. sure its been doctored a ton and sponsored by LEGO, that still doesnt make it any less entertaining

Compelling! Apparently in the Lego world, they lack the ability to buff graffiti and thus must build entire new walls to cover it. How thick can the buildings get before the walkways between them are choked off entirely?

Such troubles Lego men deal with.

It's a MyClone Grimlock from about 8-10 years ago.

Yep, MyClone Grimlock.

The MyClone series was pretty cool, they're tiny little balljointed things that can be taken apart completely to build your own bots. They made a whole lineup, but the only ones I own are Grimmy and Trypticon.
