been drawing the shit out of animal heads lately.

most of them end up kind of in the same color range.

I feel like I should be using different color combinations- any ideas/input? here is the one I like best from the batch so far, can post more if interested.

they're colored pencil on paper btw.

Really like your style.

Try to do one without using red or brown. :3

thanks, yeah maybe no brown would help.

I use photographs of animals for reference. The rest I just draw

I did this one with a little different color scheme but it still felt the same to me. the brown I think is right, that's what is doing it

sure thing.

here's a picture of some of the sketches. I usually draw in color on scraps of paper, then reverse them for symmetry (I draw half the face)

The book here on the drawing table is what I've been using for animal pictures, it's pretty old, like 70s. Just photos of animals doing stuff.

the sketches there are the hippo, octopus, and axolotl

It reminds me of yantric artwork; the stylization and geometry. If you are not familiar with it take a look and perhaps get some ideas. Keep up the good work.

Pencil on paper with maybe some acrylics, correct?

These are great, OP. I like the simple colours, wouldn't change that. Unless you really know what you're doing a more complex colour scheme will make them less elegant. The one you like best has a way bigger range of value though, so maybe you should do more of that. It does look a lot better because of it.
>> Anonymous 10/17/11(Mon)01:43 No.1047770
>>1047768
this is true, maybe I should focus more on value range than color theory for a while with these.

no acrylics, just prismacolor on tinted paper

These are pretty cool OP. Only thing is maybe you should have used a stencil when making some of the dots, like on the octopus, to keep with the symmetry. I'd love to see some more of your work.

good idea with using a stencil for making it more even. I'll try making a template with this next few I draw,.

and then I have a wordpress too, resonanteye.wordpress.com

finished a fruit bat. tried out different colors, I hate them. lol

I think I'm gonna re-do this one in more subdued colors, might try some blues and grey instead of the usual brown and red.

also, making a template for the next one I'm working on now. that was a really good idea, I can see now looking at these the imperfections/asymmetry in the backgrounds because I was just winging it.
>> Anonymous 10/17/11(Mon)04:58 No.1047854
>>1047850
Ah if you hadn't told us it was a fruit bat I wouldn't have been able to recognize it. Cos when I first saw it I thought the wings and the blue waves were part of its body.
The yellow and purple look like they clash, replacing one of them will make a big difference.

Yeah if you stare at these long enough you start to notice the tiny details that don't match up but I think it doesn't matter much as long as the overall shape of the faces are symmetrical.

I think the Hippo is my favorite out of these.
>> Anonymous 10/17/11(Mon)05:15 No.1047860
>>1047854
me too. OP here, I also like the hippo the best. I am redrawing the bat now, I will try to make the background more obviously separate from the bat.

thanks

First of all your pics look . For color-combinations;

http://kuler.adobe.com/#

? Type in anything and get plenty results. Ever tried computer aided way like freehand or illustrator. And one more question; you attached graphic elements like circles, dots and lines why not add some that refer to the animal in a way? E.g. typical african ornaments, leaves, spears, huts, kanus, glacier ice or stuff that fits to your pictures main theme?
