ITT: Fast food secrets
So i've worked at a few restaurants in my time. Figure i'd give you some of the 'inside' shit that goes on, in case you didn't know.

Burger King -
- Cini-minis are pre-made a week in advance. They sit there in boxes beneath the fry bin. They're microwaved to look fresh when they're ordered.
- Chili is made with old or burnt whopper meat
- The grease is rotated. The fries get the freshest, and the chicken and fish gets the oldest, blackest grease.
- Whoppers start out as frozen patties this thin

memorize the fucking menu. there's a good chance whatever personalized sandwich you get is available for a cheaper price by tweaking a different sandwich--remember that wheat bread is extra $ for subs and slims but free for clubs, and extra cheese and avocado will run your bill up as well. jimmy loves your money.

tuna and bacon is a kickass sandwich, try it out; for 6 slices of bacon instead of 5, order the BLT and add tuna, not vice versa. btw, the "secret sauce" in the tuna is just kikkoman's soy sauce.

I worked at Taco Bell.

The "nacho cheese" you get with nachos and other dishes?
Ya, there's no cheese in it, it comes in frozen blocks, and we melt it at the beginning of the month, and use the same batch for the entire month.
It lasts so long because there's actually no dairy in it, just some kind of wax and cheese flavor.

They're just sprayed with "tomato" flavor, which i assume is just catsup.

i work at an independent living retirement home

the food is about on par with places like mimis cafe or marie calendars. we feed 120 people 3 meals a day with 5 or 6 different choices, we rarely cater to special diets, besides low/no sugar choices for desserts. We also keep a coffee bar stocked with fresh made pastries and cookies. Other than sometimes just rinsing off a knife instead of sanitizing it between vegetables (with meats we always sanitize) we stick to health code. The soup (served with dinner meal) is usually made with leftovers fromt he last few days if we can incorporate them into it. 90% of the meals are from scratch. the other 10% is frozen vegetables or canned fruit.

Not a big one but when the buffalo chicken pizza came out for the very first time (i guess around 05-06?) i remember people calling in and complaining that they got violently ill after eating it. About a week after that i come in to work and ALL the ingredients to make them are gone. I asked my boy what happened and he said he doesn't know, a guy from corporate came in and the next thing he know the manager comes from the back office and tells him to throw it all in the dumpster. We got new ingredients for it a month later or so. Im not sure if this was my local hut or a problem nationwide with a supplier.

I work at Subway

-The "Pizza Sub" being advertised this month is just a Spicy Italian with half the meat (Double pepperoni, no salami). You can get double the meat by ordering a Spicy Italian with ALL pepperoni and ask for marinara sauce. Same price.

-The food isn't all fresh, often times, prep is done DAYS in advance. It's the worst if you go first thing in the morning.

-If you toast your sub, have the employee heat the meat first, then toast it. The meat is usually cold in the middle if you don't do it this way. And doesn't reach 160 degrees like it should (I get grossed out by that).

-The vegetables are all free. Subway is not allowed to charge you for extra vegetables at all, BUT they do train employees to go very light. So if you want more ask for more! If it's still not enough, ask again! Yes you may get an eye roll, but at least you get what you pay for.

-If you pay with a credit card, on the bottom of the receipt is the website where you can take a 1 minute survey, and get a free cookie (good for people who frequent Subway) and there is no limit (get a free cookie for each visit). This also gives you a chance to give feedback about your experience.

-Don't be afraid to ask people to change their gloves/wash their hands. Subway is the worst when it comes to cross contamination, and when busy, your food may not be the cleanest. If you get attitude, take the aforementioned survey. Often, the owner/manager will offer you free food for being inconvenienced, PLUS you don't have to worry about bad food because you can watch them.

I worked at a Dairy Queen in high school.

So the older soft serve machines at Dairy Queen, and possibly the newer ones too, are fed soft serve mix from the walk-in refrigerator via hoses that extend several feet from the machines and into the refrigerator.

The lines are drained at the end of every night. Ideally, they would also be extensively flushed with detergent, water, and disinfectant every night.

You think they flush those lines every night? Hoses, sitting at room temperature overnight, filled with dairy residue?

Maybe they do. But not at the Dairy Queen I worked at. I only saw them flush the lines once, at my own personal request. The shit that came out was absolutely disgusting.

Enjoy your blizzard.

>The vegetables are all free. Subway is not allowed to charge you for extra vegetables at all

Fellow Subway shartist, here. This is true, we have no way to ring up extra veggies. We ARE, however, allowed to refuse to put more on it. You can't just come in and clear us out of all of our olives - we WILL tell you to get out of the store.

This has happened on several occasions. Some people just expect everything for nothing. I had one young woman tell me to shake pepper on her sandwich until she told me to stop. After 45 seconds, I just put it down. When she complained, I told her to leave.

Store and regional managers don't want complaints, but they'd also rather not see food costs go soaring through the roof.

tl;dr - Be nice, and we'll give you extra anything and everything, within reason.
>>
>>3619565
Whats working at subway like?

Some guy told me to always get the shredded cheese because you always get more. Know any other shit like that?
>>
I'm a senior in high school and I work at a Whataburger.

We rarely (if ever) use gloves on the back board (where we make the burgers). Usually if the owner or manager is there, but if not no one cares.

We chop all tomatoes, onions, and lettuce in the morning (or when needed). They sit in tubs in the walk-in refrigerator until we need to get hotel-pans of them for the back board. After a while the lettuce on the bottom of the big pan gets slimy and we won't replace it until absolutely necessary.

Extra veggies are always free.

On the register, when you order something with bacon we have some options "add 1pc bacon, add 2pc bacon, add 3pc bacon". We don't give a shit on the back board and actually count it out, if the burger needs bacon we just throw some on there.

As always, being nice gets you a lot further than being an asshole. I've given people free cookies, shakes, fries, etc just because they called me Miss or said please and thank you.

Don't leave a huge mess.

Yes, we talk about you.

>>
>>3619565
>we WILL tell you to get out of the store.

LOL... NOPE.
>>
>>3619565

I never refuse extra veggies to anyone. I give people what they want, and try to make them happy. I get great tips that way. When they want extra, I put on extra- a little at a time until they are satisfied. I have never asked anyone to leave over wanting some extra olives, that's rude. If people like a lot of pepper, I sprinkle it on profusely with my face turned away while breathing out of my nose so it doesn't make me sneeze. I will admit that some customers like an obscene amount of a certain vegetable on their sandwiches, but they are the minority (at least where I work) and I would rather keep them coming back. Losing a customer causes way more of a profit loss than dumping on a few extras.
>>
>>3619395
I know of at least one Subway (inside a gas station) that will charge 50 cents for getting both lettuce and spinach on a sandwich. Otherwise you have to choose one or the other.

I thought maybe the employee was just being a dick and came back a week later. Different employee, same 50 cent charge. I no longer go to that Subway. (None of the others I've ever been to have had such a charge.)
>>
>>3619616

They aren't allowed to do that. They probably think that no one will complain about it to get away with it.

Unfortunately, Subway restaurants aren't very profitable unless you own several of them or own one that is very VERY busy. Owners will try to nickel and dime you where they can, even if it means breaking the terms of being a franchisee.
>>
>>3619565
Ok dickhead, for one: No one is going to "clear you out of your olives". No.

And if someone asks for more of one thing but NOTHING of other stuff, it could actually mean more profit for the store. You seem like an idiot so let me give you an example:

Someone comes into the store and orders a sandwich with a good amount of EVERYTHING you have as fillers or condiments. Fairly pricey, but it can still be charged as a simple "turkey sub" if it's just got turkey in it.

Other person comes in and (for some retarded reason) wants just turkey and black olives in their sandwich, b8ut they want a FUCKLOAD of black olives. It only compensates for the lack of everything else.

Stop being a fucking piece of shit. You don't own the fucking "restaurant". You work there. When someone pays your shitty ass to make a sandwich, you do what they tell you to do you fucking sack of shit.

Little Caesar's:

The deep dish pizza pans used to be coated in a special mix before putting the dough in which would give the crust a pleasant flavor. It was 50% garlic butter and 50% olive oil. Years ago, the franchise I was in (possibly others, too) stopped adding the olive oil to cut costs.

The parmesean cheese in the store is mixed in with a heavy dose of salt. If you don't want salt, you'll have to ask for a new bag to be opened.

When I last worked there, the food cost of crazy bread was 10 cents. The purchase price was $2.50, plus another 89 cents if you wanted sauce.

At the franchise I worked at, truck food deliveries came only once a week. Each store had a different day they would receive product. So if you want to ensure the freshest toppings, figure out when the truck arrives and order food 1-2 days after to ensure leftover product from the earlier week has all been used up.

The default buffalo wing sauce is some amount of Frank's Red Hot and some amount of garlic butter. Either 50/50, 1:2, or 2:1, I don't really remember.

Don't get beef on your pizza.

Just use terms like "a buttload" or more politely "a handful."

I once saw a customer ask my coworker for a "grip" of olives. When he put a bunch on, the customer says "I wanted a grip, not a gang." Apparently he was too generous.
>>
At the starbucks I worked at everything was always pretty clean. We had to literally clean everything on a checklist every 10 minutes, and everything was kept fresh and new. We had to throw out the coffee and make a fresh batch every hour. We cleaned the milk steamer after every use.

But the pastry case was nasty. There were fruit flies in it because we were near the produce section (in a grocery) and once my coworker tried to throw away some stuff that had bugs on it and the manager walked over and yelled at him. He threw them out anyway and went to get fresh stuff while we cleaned the case.

SO yea

Little Caesars manager here. I can vouch for most of these. Not the butter/redhot mix though, as we only use redhot. Also, beef was just fine and was my favorite topping until they discontinued it for some reason. The only topping at our store that have even a remote chance of getting old are like the onions and green peppers because they're fresher, i.e. not canned and we go through everything else too damn fast. Never seen anything straight-up moldy.

Other than that I can't think of anything offhand being gross. Actually no, the pizza pans are never washed, but since they regularly go through a 450 degree oven I'm pretty sure there's not a single bacterium that could survive that shit.
>>
>>3619395

Frank's Red Hot and melted butter is pretty much the default for buffalo wings everywhere, though. That's straight-up what buffalo wing sauce is. That's not really a scandal or a secret I don't think.
>>
>>3619780
Same person, and not really a secret, but there's nothing better than being surprised by a random tip. Fast food workers never expect tips so when they do get one it's fucking awesome.

For some reason in the past month I've gotten like $20-25 in tips on about 5 separate occasions. One guy seriously gave me $10 in the drive thru and he got the greatest caesar pizza of all time.
>>
The other Little Caesars guy here. Yeah, tips are extremely rare. In my 3 years working for them I only ever got maybe $10 total in tips. The franchise would actually write us up if we were caught accepting tips, but we accepted them anyway because we were all poor and an extra dollar was amazing.

I've heard other franchises treat their employees well, but mine I was making near-minimum wage as an assistant manager. (Earned $2 in raises including promotion, minimum wage went up $1.50 or so, new employees/trainees were making some 30 cents less than I was, and they couldn't be bothered to give anyone a raise. They canceled all benefits for assistant managers around the same time, too.)

The beef thing could have depended upon the distributor we were linked to. We got our food distributed from Chicago and it'd always have this white stuff all over it. Cooked it and tried it anyway, and it tasted awkward.

I can confirm the pan thing, too. Only time they'd ever be cleaned is when a glob of sauce got in them. But that oven would kill any potential bacterium.

I worked for Papa Murphy's, too. Aside from the fresh mushrooms never actually being washed and the dirt clumps being left on them (possibly just a store thing), there isn't really anything secret about the place. All the veggies were fresh and prepared day-of, cut/diced on site. Any sauces came pre-bagged so the compositions unknown. Store I worked at was very clean.

I worked a subway. I saw food being relabled a couple of times but it was never anything especially dangerous, just the processed beef being extended to three days instead of two which was never going to do anyone any harm. We had guidelines for vegetables (Something like three slices of tomato/cucumber for a 6-inch sandwich) but we were generally encouraged to be pretty generous with it

Cross-contamination wasn't a problem at the one I worked at either. We got a lot of moslems, so any time they'd come in gloves would be changed as the meat isn't halal. I'd generally change them every couple of minutes anyway.

Worked at a Timmies/Coldstone location, this is true. I was once sent to purchase fruit from the grocery store to freeze, too, even though we weren't supposed to do that (contamination worries and all that jazz), but our store owner was a fucking cheapass. She also wanted one pair of rubber gloves to be used between all staff to clean the bathrooms with, no disposable ones like THE LAW STATES ONE MUST USE WHEN CLEANING KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS HERE.

Timmies isn't "always fresh" - known for a long time though. The muffins are the only actual fresh-baked good there; the dough comes frozen. Everything else is partially baked and we pop it in the oven for a bit. I don't trust the egg patties we get; the scrambled eggs in your breakfast wrap is just those things chopped up.

Our dishwasher was also just one of those things that sprays the dishes with hot water.

worked as a cook at Culver's restaurants.

If you only read one thing of this: DO NOT TIP THE PEOPLE WHO BRING YOU YOUR FOOD. They don't fucking deserve it - it is the easiest job in the world, and just because the foods delivered to you doesn't make it tip worthy.

as said before, we nuke all our mashed potatoes and green beans, and our chili is made from old hamburger that was left out on the grill.

If you order from the drive through, your order has to be done in under 4 minutes, 5 if you're inside. Some things like the fried chicken sandwich take 5 minutes to cook, sometimes we pull stuff 20 secs early if were running behind. We start the timer after you pull through, so mention fried food as soon as possible and your order will get done faster.

Lastly dont make a mess-once a couple of douchebag highschoolers made a huge mess and then came up to order some shakes to go. One of them ended up with pubes in theirs, and rightly so. As far as i can recall, tainting food only happened once.

Are there any terrible things I should know about the meatball sub at Subway?
>>
I worked at starbucks.

can't really say anything that bad about it except the absurd amount of cleaning with chemicals could easily lead to someone who doesn't give a fuck poisoning someone.

other than that frappucinos are made with instant coffeeish packets and a sweet coffee flavored creamy thing. although when we made them for ourselves we usually used espresso beans (which would grind up in the blender that moved at 2873827382 mph) and milk, then sweetened them on our own. the cream based ones use some odd heavy powder that I can't remember the name of. Chai tea lattes use a concentrate of chai tea instead of brewed chai tea.

I honestly can't think of anything nasty we did. No food stayed in the display cases for more than 2-3 days and if a pastry trey started to stale it would usually get taken out. The store I worked at was laid back but efficient outside of a couple of crazy supervisors that didn't last and everyone fucking each other and each other's friends.

they're refrigerated. bread items are tossed at noon-1 the day they arrive. pastries all have their own expiration date (either at the end of the day, following day, or third day)

I can't remember exactly but I think the breakfast sandwiches (also refrigerated) are tossed at the end of the day after they arrive.

I was honestly surprised by starbucks' standards. I don't like it enough to go back there frequently unless it's the only place with coffee around but I have no ill-will towards it other than how understaffed we were, but I think that had more to do with our district manager because she was known as being pretty stingy.

i'm a chinese food delivery guy for an extremely authentic place (almost 90% chinese clientele, it's a very asian area, i'm one of 2 workers that doesn't speak mandarin)

if you don't tip i remember you 100%. it's crazy i remember people who haven't tipped from months ago. usually it's repeat offenders too. you will not get your food on time, and if i'm doing multiple deliveries yours will be dead last, i might even stop over at 711 for a bottle of water first. the other drivers are even worse, they'll go hang out with friends with your food in the car, go get starbucks for the workers, etc. etc. also if you don't tip multiple times i tell the manager and we stop delivering to you.

essentially if it's a small business fast food place i wouldn't recommend stiffing them.

I worked at a Subway for 3 years, was even the assistant manager til I decided it was going to be the death of me and found a new job.

We were told to charge for any extra veggies. If we were asked to add more than the "great" Subway formula, sorry extra. I'd put extra on and never charge because the amount they tell you to put on is bullshit.

All I can really say is, go in the afternoon, you will get the freshest bread or cookies.

Our prepped food didn't stay in the fridge for long since we had par levels for everyday. I'd say a day at most and that's only for about 1 or 2 items. We prepped almost everything, everyday.
>>
>>3623167

We usually let the workers eat them. Sometimes we put them in little cups as samples. We certainly were not allowed to sell them. I guess it depends on which Subway you go to.
>>
>>3618734
>Apparently a lot of the mix-ins sit in their containers for weeks and they just add the new stuff on top.

This is pretty standard, I work at Rita's and we do this also. I don't understand, it's not a problem to just refill the containers with the fresh stuff when they run out, just seems like common sense.

Other than that I'd say Ice cream/custard places in general can be a gamble because you never know if they stick to the protocol when it comes to routinely cleaning their machines, shit seriously gets nasty in there.

worked at Papa Murphy's for two years. the crusts, after they are sheeted and put in a refrigerated walk-in, are good for 3 days but we'd keep using the crusts until they started looking too sticky and smelling too sweet. the first manager i had there would make us re-label old veggies when we had people coming to check on us. and most of us never washed off the mushrooms before slicing them. if we got a rude customer, we'd skimp heavily on toppings as 'payback'.

i also worked a couple years at a Regal theater and the 'butter' is nothing more than flavored coconut oil. sometimes the popcorn would sit for a good chunk of the day, and sometimes we'd mix up burn batches and still sell it. if we got rude customers we'd skimp a bit on butter, amount of popcorn, etc. but if i got a nice customer, i'd stuff bags full til it was falling out.

nothing too crazy.

I worked at Tim Hortons in Canada for almost 2 years before they started to only hire choppy-english brown women.
Everything, and I mean absolutely everything is frozen. All the soups and chilis come in these 2lb bags and then they boil them inside the bags and then empty them into these little containers so they appear more "freshly made".
They don't keep times on the coffee or steeped tea. You do for maybe the first couple of weeks but soon it is until the pot is empty.
The french vanillas, english toffees, and apple cider is all sugary powder.
The ice caps are pure cream and this liquid sugary mess you get in big containers. The vat holder for the ice cap mix is almost never cleaned.
Just a side note, I wouldn't buy the chicken breast things. I was transfered between two different locations and at both locations if they were dropped, they would simply wash it off with water and then that was that. The reason is we are given these shitty tongs and the meat has the consistency of tofu sort of so it slips easily. No one thought to maybe bring a plate.
Trying to think of anything else,
Oh, during the summer before you decide to buy donuts and what not scan the racks because Tim Hortons is really bad for flies. The drive-thru window is almost always open and everything is open for flies to lay their little children upon.

there is this place around here that people rave over the salad, and I have to give it to them, there is something about this salad that is like crack. it is always served for free, a big bowl in the middle of the table and the thing with dressing is on the side (I think the dressing is the part with the crack in it), the salad bowls are all made of wood which as we know now are a breeding ground for bacteria but here is the kicker, any salad that is not finished even out of peoples individual bowls, they take it to the back and hose the dressing off and throw it back in with the other salad which they keep in a garbage can in the back.

so when you eat salad there you are not only eating yours but you are eating the unfinished salad of everybody else that has ever been there.

Worked at Subway for two years.

We bake our bread twice a day. Once when we open, and once during the shift change at around 4. Those are your best bets for fresh bread.

Don't order the Tuna when cambrel is almost empty. It's been sitting there for hours.

Toast your bread for half the time. It warms it up without making it retardedly dry.

We have at least three different ways we can ring up each sandwich. If I like you you're going to be paying less.

former mcdonalds employee here and while there's an assload of reasons why i quit last year this is why i dont work fast food anymore in general.

>tl;dr
>caught guy jerking off behind counter
>drive thru customers get shit the worst

it was just before change in shifts, and there wasn't any1 in at the moment. some other employees went round back to talk about some crap that happened with a customer earlier (as if it rarely happens). So it was just me and this other guy out front at mccafe. guy sticks his hand in pocket then starts this sneaky jerk off. I didnt realize till he made it obvious. he knew i was aware of his clever ruse but kept going. he also made a hole in his pocket and he came in his hand just as this lady and her kid comes in.

I was in a "wut" moment and ended up taking the lady's order. She ordered strawberry lemonade and a vanilla shake. guy overheard the lady while i was cashing the order and started making the vanilla and i think he put the jizz in it. Either way shit was disgusting and the fucking the lady was on her phone the whole time and not paying attention at all. before i gave the lady her order the guy gives me this look as in say/do something, i kinda paused and decided to spill the drink but the lady yelled at me to bring it on over. Worst feel ever cuz i think it was for her daughter. I quit at the end of the week.

also while i worked there and stuff falls on the floor round back shiz will be picked up and bagged. the nigs doing drive thru dgaf. saw it happen three times enough to assume it's a regular thing. only for drive thru orders tho.

She was fired for having a conversation with some people while a car was waiting in the drive through for 15 minutes

Eurofag here: I know that I should avoid fast food places like the plague while in the USA, but aren't things way better outside of the US?

Worked at McDonalds in Germany for a couple months before getting into university. Franchise, not company. Very clean, strict guidelines and camera surveillance everywhere, especially in the food preparation area. Then again, while studying I worked at an upscale Italian place. I would not recommend going there in terms of hygiene.

Juts think about humanity in general. Then think about Euro Disney. That alone should tell you that its entirely hit and miss when it comes to sanitary food and good service no matter where you go. Hell, a few episodes of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares should tell you that some people don't clean anything properly.

We were one serving marinara sauce that was about 6 months past expiry but that was more due to a fuckup from the suppliers and we took it off the menu right away once we found out.

The cardboard box the bags of sauce came in said it was okay for a few weeks but the bags themselves had the real date only it was fucking impossible to see that because they were old and faded. Actually, I'm not sure anyone ever got served the out-of-date stuff. I just got a phone-call one time before it opened that told me to check the bags and then not to sell any of that shit

I work at Krystal which is basically the South's version of White Castle.

I often spot bits of bright pink matter in the patties. My manager says it's plastic. Whatever it is, it is clearly not meat.

Our fry shortening is "deodorized beef tallow." Something about it leaves a weird film on the roof of your mouth that you can notice easier when the food is old.

Don't expect anything to be fresh unless you ask for it or we're very busy.

We hold everything way, way past the timers.

Interestingly enough considering no one buys them, the breakfast items are probably the best things in the restaurant. We use in-shell eggs, not the watery Egg Beaters crap, and it's hard to fuck up grits and bacon.
>>
>>3623767
In some places, Germany and Russia e.g., people are more distrustful of fast food, so the fast food places have to scale up and act like real restaurants to gain their trust.

I work at a small pizza joint and am general pretty conscious about cleanliness. One of the managers praised me for washing my hands after getting back from a delivery, even though we always should.

We roll our dough every morning and put it all in a bin at the end of the night. If it is still decent, we will use some of it in the roll the next morning. If it sucks, we just use it in the recipe when we make new dough. The sizes of the pizza will vary by day. Even though we have templates to cut them out with, some people cut them weird or the dough will shrink when we move the paper or cook it. The mixing bowl we make dough in is really only cleaned when we make sausage in it.

We chop veggies every other day or so. We are a smaller place so we don't go though them that fast. I hate doing it, but other guys will chop wilting green peppers and zucchini. They are rarely served fresh and when cooked on a pizza who can really tell?

For deliveries, the price can vary by a few bucks depending on where you live, but some people put in their best guess and a house a mile down the road can be $2 more. We have waitresses taking calls and they aren't too sure where things are and just guess. I always drive to a place as fast as I can, no matter what their tipping history is. If it is a busy night, I won't put my car topper on and drive pretty recklessly.

Oh. Damn, I was camped out in Kuwait for a week on either side of that, and then in a shithole part of Iraq where we didn't have any MWR phone/internet.

Sorry about your friend, Anon.

I work at a Jet's Pizza

There is nothing unsanitary about the place, everything is kept clean and the food is fresh as fuck. Our ingredients are really expensive because they are such good quality. The cheese is considered "gold" here because its so motherfucking expensive. It's good ass cheese though. Everyone treats each other like bros, and we all love our job. Jet's Pizza is the best job I've ever had.

The only thing I can really say is that, don't each jet's pizza if you don't like oil. We put about 2oz of oil in the bottom of the pans, the dough goes on top, when it's placed in the oven the dough fries in the oil giving it a crazy crunchy and delicious crust.

I've never worked at a fast food place, but if I did, I would have the urge to fuck with, or just straight up ignore, people who asked for their food to be 'made fresh'.

I'm not saying I would, but I'd think really hard about it, and I'm sure I'd end up doing it a time or two during my employment.

It just seems, and has always seemed to me, like an incredibly, incredibly douchy thing to ask.
>>
Reading through this thread...I really don't understand why some people think it's OK, or that nothing ill will befall them, if they treat the people who handle or prepare their food like shit. I just really don't get it.

That said, people who deliberately fuck with, contaminate/taint, or mess up food just because they're butthurt about their job, or even about a customer's attitude, deserve to be flayed alive under a gasoline/salt water sprinkler, but still.

Be polite, don't stand there at the register for ten minutes figuring out what you want (Wait outside of the line while you figure out), apologize if you're doing something rude like talking on the phone, and be friendly.

In short, be a normal fucking courteous human being - it's what's expected of you, and it's only reasonable.

The only thing that pisses me off more than people who are rude or hostile to food service personnel, are people who fly off the handle at tech support people...

..and the food service personnel who deliberately fuck with food. Because fuck you guys, I've never been anything but polite and pleasant when I've ordered food (At absolute worst I've been quiet and distracted when I was depressed or something) - NEVER have I been rude, and I always tip...And I've been hospitalized twice for food poisoning, from Pizza Hut and Roly Poly Sandwich Shop.

So fuck you guys.

...and that's why I carry a goddamned gun. Whether I'm road-trippin', going on a midnight munchies run, grocery shopping, or going to the gym.

You're a fucking fool if you go places unarmed.

general mills makes the cini-minis for bk
they come in as frozen balls of dough so all bk has to do is bake them
do you mean they bake all the cini-minis a week in advance?
>>
>>3624231
I work in fast food, and I perfectly understand.

I don't get paid enough to care to make sure that every single item I send out is fresh, but if someone asks for it, I kind of have to.
>>
>>3623115
The House Sauce is literally my favorite thing from TJ's, love that shit. Tacos are pretty good, too. Loads more flavor than TB has.
>>
>>3624253

Yeah, but if I'm asking someone to go above and beyond the normal call of their duties, I should, I think, provide appropriate incentive that they A) do it to begin with, and B) do it properly.

I don't have any problem monetarily showing my appreciation for stellar service.
>>
>>3624266
Sending out fresh food is technically the call of duty.

Realistically, minimum wage is not even close to enough to bother with it 100% of the time.

If I make a bunch of food, then we're slow for a while and that food sits around for a bit, I'm not going to scrap everything and remake it the second someone orders something.

But if they ask for it fresh, I'm not going to give them obviously not fresh food.
>>
>>3624281

>fresh

That being the point of contention. 'Fresh' is a very vague and relative term.

And even then, no, the call of duty is to deliver to the customer his or her order, without it being a product that will make them sick.

If they order a stock Double Cheeseburger, and you've had three sitting on the waiting line for fifteen minutes under a heat lamp, and fries that have been in the bin for a half hour...That fits the bill.

Honestly though, I don't understand why people get grossed out about that. I leave food sitting around on the stove or the slow cooker shittons longer than that in my own home.

Fuck, right now I've got stuff in my slow cooker that's been sitting at 'warm' for almost 24 hours, and I just got myself a bowl of it. Am I worried? No, of course not, because the shit's still sanitary, safe, and tasty. Does it taste quite as good as it did right when it was done cooking? No, but that's not the point.
>>
>>3623704

oh lol are you her best friend?

i remember being 14-15 and reading this story all over myspace (when myspace was actually popular)
>>
>>3624283
So getting fast food should be a gamble? It might be fresh, or it might have been sitting under a heat lamp for an hour?

You're paying the same price regardless.
>>
>>3624286

What's your point?

You cannot honestly expect to get every ingredient prepared fresh at any and all times of day at a fast food restaurant.
>>
>>3624289

...at least, not at McDonalds prices. It's simply not cost efficient.

It happens at places like Arby's, Whataburger, In 'n Out, Five Guys, and so forth because it's more expensive, and they can afford to deviate from such an assembly line-ish process.
>>
>>3624291
Fuck I love Whataburger. Their prices aren't even that bad compared to places that don't prepare everything fresh and they have the best fucking fast food.

Why the fuck can't they open some up north?
>>
>>3624342

Fuck you Yankees, they need to stretch East to cover the rest of the CSA first.
>>
>>3619625
I frequently order salads at subway and they charge me for a veggie and cheese sub D: CAN THEY DO THAT?! I don't get anything on it except vegetables. Its usually 6 dollars - used to be three because it was similar to a six inch veggie sub.
>>
>>3624289
Even at regular restaurants. Does anyone think we're really going to dip in to the new stock when there's a risk of the old stuff going bad?

At the place I work at (a nice French cafe, very reputable) we serve many things that are on the verge of going bad, but aren't quite there yet. Throwing food away really sucks, so if it's not going to taste funky after it gets good (like a lot of meat), and it's not going to make you sick. There's no real reason to not serve it.
>>
>>3619554
What exactly came out when you flushed the hoses?
>>
>>3619749
I used to work at a McDonald's, and honestly it was pretty damn clean. I've seen waaaay worse than McDonald's. All the food prep was fairly standard, nothing out of the ordinary or gross that I saw. The food isn't good for you, but it tastes good and they take care of it (where I worked at least).
>>
>>3624231

If the place is busy, then your food is likely to be fresh anyways. Just don't ask for the fish sandwich at BK, especially when it's busy. That stuff always sits around forever, and cooking a new one means tying up a fryer for a good 5 minutes. That's not something they want to do at peak hours.

If you ask for fresh food during a slow time, then the employees likely won't care about making it fresh. It's not a hassle by any means. Just be prepared to wait for it.

the funny part is how the franchise covered everything up, same month i quit the guy came up on the news for pedophile related shenanigans (a repeat offender of the sort). it was on a couple news sites and blogs. I didn't know his real name, i only came across it from remembering his face cuz they featured a photo of him. I don't even think they fired him immediately, I was passing thru the area and saw him still there like two months later. googled the articles recently and they're all gone. The people i tell are usually like "y u no tell supervisor" "y u no file complaint" etc. I was relatively new there and the staff at the time seemed to have their own little circles and treated the new people like shit. I didn't wanna have anything to do with anyone there just do the job get my money. I figured even if i tell em, i'll prolly get fired or harassed to quit seeing as they're all friends etc. I just wanted out after that.

Ever since i've been paranoid as fuck to eat out.
>>
>>3624530
>The food isn't good for you

It's no worse for you than burgers and fries from anywhere else.
>>
>>3624286

It's fresh during non-rush times. During rush (busy) times, they prepare it before it's ordered so it might be under a heat lamp for 10 minutes at most.
>>
What type of person usually messes with the food? I have to eat out a lot because my school in located downtown and I don't subscribe to their meal-plan because I live off-campus. I've noticed that there are some sketchy-looking people working there, and even at a subway on my way home I'll see some mexican girl looking like she's holding in a laugh when she's making my sandwich.
>>
Ausfag here
a friend of mine works at Red Rooster, a local chicken based fast food chain, and has claimed that the chicken in the chicken strip roles is made from the whole/half/quarter chickens they had left over from up to several days before

>>3618336
>little plastic containers held above hot
good god they're using a bain marie! what animals!
>>
At the subway near my school, I once saw the manager pour flour all over the floor and then me made some mexican guy sweep it into every inch of the floor. I have no idea what they were doing but it seems like he does this every week.
>>
>>3624995
Probably not flour.
>>
Sure pretty much everyone knows this by now but the Tuna at Subway is more mayo than tuna. It makes me laugh when people try to be healthy and order it, the thing is massively caloried and is one of the worst things on the menu for you.
>>
>>3625036
it was flour for sure. I saw the bag and everything. He just scooped handfuls onto the floor and told the guy to push the stuff around into every crack. Some lady walked in and they were still to busy to take her order.
>>
>>3625057
It could have easily been something else in a bag for flour. At Little Caesar's we kept road salt in a floor cleaner bucket.
>>
>>3625057
I think some restaurants use flour to clean up vomit. I guess by the same logic (or what I think the logic is), the flour could be used to soak up hard to clean oils or something along those lines.
>>
Worked at Denny's - Nothing too gross there except everything that can't be deep fried or cooked on the grill (like pasta dishes, rice etc) comes in frozen bags that get boiled then cut open and put on your plate.

Coldstone - >>3618734 can confirm about the mixins being kinda old. We did FIFO, but it was kinda like, dump the old stuff out, put new stuff on the bottom, put old stuff on top... It wasn't the freshest thing. Also I made the ice cream and the policy is not to clean the machine between batches and they get made from lightest to darkest so that you can't tell. After all the stuff is made it gets cleaned of course. Also the fruit is actually cheap canned pie filling (why I prefer marble slab, they use fresh fruit)
>>
>>3625136
I remember flour causing most of the buildup at Little Caesar's. When we needed to clean up oil we'd used cornmeal, but I suppose flour would work too.
>>
>>3618559
>>3618559

I seriously lol'd
>>
>>3624284

No, I wasn't her "best friend." I'm assuming you're talking about the kid who was giving out interviews and shit. We were mostly friendly co-workers who would hang out sometimes. She was one of the few people there that wasn't an absolute fucker to work with. Funny how it's never the huge asshole that gets murdered right?

>>3624624
Yeah, franchise owners are dickheads from what I've experienced. I'm not sure how much better it would have been if it were a corporate store but I can damn sure tell you this guy (Matt or something like that was his name, owns a chain of McD's in portland metro/couv) was about as likeable as anal warts.

One of his McD's burned to the ground a year or two later. Karma maybe, or maybe a vigilante of justice.
>>
>>3625136

The best I can think of is using it to soak up misc. liquids/oils/whatever on the floor.

It could have also been a quality control test for the manager...Make sure all of the flour is gone when you clean up, or there'll be hell to pay. I've had leaders to similar things in the military...Granted, that's a dramatically different scenario, but still, might be the same concept.
>>
>>3618336
>At Rallys (or Checkers down south)
SO THATS WHY THE FUCKING COMMERCIALS ARE THE SAME.

JESUS FUCK LORD
>>
>>3619625
>Owners will try to nickel and dime you where they can, even if it means breaking the terms of being a franchisee.
One Indian nigger at a Subway told me to pay 50 cents for my refill so I just walked out.

How fucking cheap can you get. It's not like I was pooring fountain soda into my mouth. I have never been charged for a refill before in my life.
>>
>>3625865
Here is Michigan I think it's actually Checkers, despite not being anywhere near the South. It was Rally's when I was little but at some point they all changed to Checkers here.
>>
>>3625787
It's usually done with sawdust, but flour works as well, and I think flour would be a bit easier to find lying around.
>>
>>3625886
There is a Checkers on Garfield and 18 mile in Clinton Township. You are correct.
>>
>>3625886
God tier fries. Had Rally's a lot when I was a kid, have yet to try Checkers yet even though there is one right down the street from me. Are the fries still the same?
>>
>>3623668
thats it

I'm simply done eating fast food.

Forever.
>>
>>3618559
ah ahahahaha
I get it now
>>
>>3625896
Not sure about the fries, but I had an olive burger there once and was surprised by how good it was. Really wasn't expecting that for the price I paid.
>>
>>3625898

You buy food ANYWHERE, you're going to have similar scenarios. Anywhere. From the deli, to the supermarket, to the butcher shop, to whatthefuckever.

Unless you kill/pick your own damned food, SOMEONE is going to handle it before it makes it to your hands. And that someone very well might abuse or fuck with it.

Realize this, and fucking inspect and cook your shit, yo.
>>
>>3623732

I worked at Hardee's the summer before I left for college. We didn't wear gloves and I witnessed a coworker drop a pattie on the ground and then proceed to pick it up and use it to finish the burger he was making.

DO NOT GO TO THE HARDEE'S IN HANCOCK MARYLAND
>>
I worked at McDonalds.

There were mexicans that cooked and made the food and all the white people talked to the customers.

There's nothing particularly gross. Everything is frozen in the store obviously.
>>
>>3626113
Well, that's already a little better than most McDonalds, which just have Mexicans doing every single job and getting your order wrong every time because the fuckers don't understand English.
>>
I work at Papa John's
I cum in your pizzas
I don't give a fuck
>>
Not quite what you're looking for, but a local breakfast place got in some shit recently for taking uneaten bacon and sausage from dirty dishes and reusing it for new customers.

Late to the party but:

>Starbucks baristas
>baristas
>pressing buttons on a coffee machine

late as well. Worked as line chef and dishwasher at local pizza joint.

We never use gloves. The dishwashing machine did its job but then dishes would sit in the open Dish room for hours at a time, attracting flies. Sometimes it would sit overnight, and when you mopped up it got on the plates and shit. I kid you not...your dishes probably arent clean
>>
>>3623767
Uh, fast food places in the US get paid actual minimum wage and some benefits. The thing you're talking about is small restaurants.
>>
>>3623767
>>3626925
In some states waiters can be paid under minimum if they get tips. Issue is that those who get minimum in other states still get tips. It's pretty ridiculous for a job that doesn't require any schooling to give them handouts. What minimum wage for if not for no experience needed jobs?
>>
Hey, Anyone here who works subway? I went in because there was a banner outside their shop that said 5 Dollar ANY sub nothing about Exceptions on it. so I walk in and ask for a Subway Melt. Didnt add ANYTHING extra And then the price came up as $6.50 and I told the guy that it says outside 5 Dollar any sub and he said But this is a exception and i told him thats false advertising you cant do that and he told me to leave i ended up coming back and sueing them for false advertsing and won.
>>
>>3618690

I worked at Jimmy John's for a time, and I can confirm this is true.

To make JJ tuna salad its Tuna, Mayo, celery, onion, soy sauce.

The italian sauce is only a 70/30 mix of Olive Oil to Red Wine Vinaigrette

Bacon comes precooked from a bag. Nothing comes to mind in regards to old ingredients, we typically ran through them by the end of the day.

Worst thing I saw was that the tea dispenser nozzles never were cleaned and had mold growing on the inside. Only time it got cleaned was when the health inspector caught it...probably standard in any fast food place.
